[PHOTOS] Health Minister, Mamora commisions revamped General Hospital, Calabar

Yesterday in Calabar, Senator Olorunimbe Mamora Honorable, Minister of State for Health alongside deputy governor Prof. Ivara Esu and Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, commisioned the newly revamped General Hospital, Calabar.

While commissioning the new general hospital, Sen. Mamora said “people will just try to fall sick so they can come to General hospital, Calabar and spend some time”.

An elated Dr Edu in an article on her verified Facebook page, said she is grateful for the opportunity to change things for the “Betta”, so she got to bed happy yesterday and returned all glory to God for everything.

“I felt tears build up in my eyes. Not because I was sad or angry. It was tears of gratitude, tears of joy. Like a flash, the old General hospital came to my head and all I could say is “God is faithful”. Welcome to the new general hospital, Calabar”.

Before now the General Hospital, Calabar which is presumed to be the biggest health facility in the state was more than an apology due to its poor and deplorable state. It became a shadow of itself and couldn’t serve the yearning of citizens of the state in the area of health care.

At some point, it was reported that there was no power supply in the hospital either because there is no fuel supply or breakdown of generating set, no water supply and even the pharmacy in the Hospital is worst than a small patent chemist. Meanwhile, this is a health facility that generates revenue for the state government.

Just like the Calabar General Hospital, hospitals across the state are fast collapsing following the neglect of the health facilities by the state government. Heealth facilities in the state needs to be upgraded, especially those that provide secondary and primary components of the health care needs of the people.

Although Dr Edu said General Hospital Ogoja, Ugep, Obubra, Abi and Yala are coming up soon, places like Obanlikwu, Akpabuyo, Bekwara etc should be added to to implement the state’s policies and programmes on health Care delivery.
