The family of Chief Bassey Ekpenyong Asuquo are demanding justice over the alleged killing of their mother, Mrs Ima-Obong Bassey Ekpenyong by a joint taskforce on the day she was burying her husband.

Chief Asuquo was said to be assassinated by a group of men believed to hail from the community. While the incident created panic in the community and its environs and an investigation was ongoing, double tragedy struck.
Narrating the story, a family source, Roselyn-Eme Ephraim, said the police had held the deceased’s corpse for weeks to carry out investigations but unfortunately, the investigation produced no result.
Ephraim told CrossRiverWatch that due to how Chief Asuquo was murdered, they decided to lay him to rest, on Saturday the 17th of June 2023, after the police agreed to release his remains. Shortly after he was committed to mother earth, suspected joint taskforce team comprising of the Police, DSS, and Army allegedly stormed his residence and shot sporadically and “directly into the compounds” and in the process, Mrs Ima-Obong Bassey Ekpenyong, the wife of the assassinated Village Head was caught by a bullet.
