The NGO advocacy for Sustainable Forest Management and Timber Harvesting in Boki Local Government Area
Background:
Boki Local Government Area, located in the heart of Cross River State, is one of Nigeria’s most biodiversity-rich regions, blessed with vast tropical rainforests, timber resources, and unique wildlife habitats such as the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary and Cross River National Park. These forests are critical not only for environmental balance but also for the livelihood of local communities who depend on forest products for income, medicine, and food.
However, increasing deforestation, illegal logging, and unsustainable timber harvesting practices threaten the survival of these forests, leading to soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, flooding, and changes in local climate patterns. Without urgent intervention, the rich natural heritage of Boki may be lost, with devastating consequences for future generations.
Advocacy Objective
To promote sustainable forest management (SFM) and responsible timber harvesting practices that balance environmental conservation with the economic needs of local communities in Boki LGA.
