Senegal, Morocco Sanctioned After Chaotic AFCON Final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a series of suspensions and fines to Senegalese and Moroccan players following an investigation into the chaotic scenes that marred the AFCON 2025 final in Morocco.

The match descended into controversy after the referee awarded Morocco a stoppage-time penalty. The decision triggered protests from the Senegalese camp, leading head coach Pape Thiaw to instruct his players to leave the pitch.

The CAF Disciplinary Board imposed a five-match suspension on Thiaw from all CAF competitions and fined him $100,000 for unsporting conduct. Several Senegalese players and the national football federation also received sanctions.

On the Moroccan side, captain Achraf Hakimi and midfielder Ismaël Saibari were suspended and fined for unsporting behavior. The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was also fined for the "inappropriate conduct" of stadium ball boys.

Meanwhile, CAF has dismissed Morocco's complaint contesting the match result, clarifying that while disciplinary proceedings were necessary, they do not affect Senegal's victory.
