Nigeria and five other African countries are set to benefit from a €5 million grant aimed at promoting climate-smart agriculture and improving food systems across the continent.
The countries expected to benefit from the initiative include Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi. The funding is designed to support the adoption and expansion of agricultural technologies that can help farmers adapt to climate change while increasing productivity.
The development was highlighted during a high-level work planning meeting held in Kigali, Rwanda, under the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) programme.
The meeting brought together several stakeholders from across the agricultural sector, including representatives of governments, research institutions, private sector partners and development organisations.
The programme is supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and aims to strengthen agricultural systems by introducing innovative technologies that can improve crop yields and support sustainable farming practices.
The €5 million funding is being provided by Germany and will be administered through the African Development Bank’s Transition Support Facility to support activities in the six participating countries.
Experts say the initiative will focus on strengthening seed systems, improving agricultural research capacity and promoting modern farming technologies that can help farmers cope with the impact of climate change.
Another key focus of the programme will be encouraging youth participation in agriculture, while also expanding digital advisory tools that will help farmers access information on weather conditions, farming techniques and input distribution.
Officials involved in the programme explained that strong partnerships between governments, development partners and research institutions would be essential to ensure the success of the initiative.
They also noted that strengthening agricultural systems across Africa is critical in addressing food insecurity and reducing the continent’s vulnerability to climate-related shocks.
Stakeholders at the meeting emphasized that improving agricultural productivity and building resilient food systems will play a major role in ensuring long-term food security for millions of people across the continent.
The programme is expected to strengthen collaboration among participating countries while helping farmers access improved technologies and better farming practices that can support sustainable agricultural growth in Africa.
