The suspect, identified as Malime Ejor, is said to have attacked his lover, 26-year-old Moshie Igu, during a heated argument in the early hours of Saturday.
According to information gathered from community members, the couple had reportedly been having issues in their relationship for some time. On the day of the incident, the disagreement between them escalated after the man allegedly accused the woman of being unfaithful.
Sources in the community said the argument later turned violent while the two were at a farm in the area around 6am. Residents who were nearby said they heard shouting and rushed to the scene, only to discover that the woman had already been severely attacked.
Eyewitnesses said efforts to stop the suspect initially proved difficult as the situation had already gone out of control before people could intervene.
The incident immediately threw the quiet community into panic, as villagers gathered at the scene in shock over the tragic development.
Angry youths in the area later overpowered the suspect and prevented him from escaping before handing him over to security operatives.
The victim was said to have died from the injuries she sustained during the attack, leaving residents of the community mourning and calling for justice.
Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Command said the suspect is currently in custody while investigation into the matter has commenced.
The Police also assured that the law will take its course as authorities work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
