Ghana Urges South Africa to Act After Reported Xenophobic Attacks

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has engaged his South African counterpart to protest widely circulated videos appearing to show xenophobic attacks against Ghanaian nationals. 

Describing the footage as "extremely disturbing", Ablakwa urged South African authorities to take prompt action. 

"The South African Foreign Minister has expressed empathy with the victims and promised full-scale investigations into these depressing incidents," Ablakwa said via social media. 

He said diplomats at the Ghanaian mission have located the primary victim featured in the viral video and are currently providing consular assistance. 

The Ghanaian official said the South African government plans to hold briefings with African ambassadors regarding the xenophobic attacks.
