Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River South Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has said his partnership with the commission has led to the empowerment of 500 youths in Cross River State.
The programme, carried out in collaboration with federal agencies, combined skills training with the distribution of starter assets and financial support aimed at boosting youth entrepreneurship and reducing unemployment in the state.
Ekpenyong disclosed that beneficiaries received business support including cash grants of ₦250,000, alongside operational tools such as minibuses and tricycles to help them start and sustain small-scale transport and commercial ventures.
He explained that the intervention was designed not just as welfare support, but as a structured empowerment scheme to promote self-reliance, job creation, and long-term economic stability among young people.
The senator urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the opportunity by investing wisely, maintaining the equipment provided, and avoiding resale of the items, stressing that the goal is to build sustainable livelihoods.
He also noted that the programme was implemented with support from development partners and agencies working within the Niger Delta region to expand economic opportunities for youths.
