A 14-year-old girl, Miss Nancy Peter, has died in Wula Community, Boki Local Government Area, following an alleged case of assault, the Cross River State Police Command has confirmed.

According to community reports, the incident occurred after the child was handed over to a pastor by her mother for “disciplinary purposes.” The development reportedly sparked outrage among residents, with local leaders said to have handed the pastor over to police. There are also claims that the mother is currently unaccounted for, while tensions remain around the church premises.

In an incident report released by the Cross River State Police Command, it said the suspect is currently in custody and a thorough investigation is ongoing into the death of Miss Nancy Peter.

Preliminary findings by the police indicate that:

1. The victim was allegedly beaten by her mother, Mrs. Agnes Peter, 45, over allegations of theft.

2. The mother later took the child to Pastor Samson Roman Dago, 43, who allegedly subjected her to further corporal punishment with a cane, locally called “koboko”.

3. The minor reportedly became unconscious and was rushed to a medical facility in Wula Community, where she was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The police said relevant medical examinations and investigative procedures are ongoing to ascertain all facts. The Command also addressed social media claims alleging sexual assault, stating that at this stage, investigations have not established evidence to substantiate such claims.

“Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” the police statement read.
