Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed confidence that former Cross River State governor, Donald Duke, would emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election if Nigeria conducts a truly free and fair poll.

Datti made the assertion while defending Duke's emergence as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party. According to him, Duke possesses the leadership qualities, competence, and national appeal required to transform Nigeria.

He argued that in a transparent electoral process, Duke would be capable of defeating both incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and opposition figure Peter Obi.

The former senator also dismissed concerns surrounding Duke's nomination, insisting that the former governor was duly selected through the party's internal processes. He maintained that Nigerians are increasingly searching for credible alternatives to the country's traditional political establishment.

Datti's comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several parties already positioning their candidates and building alliances in preparation for the contest. Recent developments have seen Peter Obi secure his party's presidential ticket while President Tinubu is widely expected to seek re-election.

Donald Duke, who governed Cross River State from 1999 to 2007, remains one of Nigeria's most recognised former governors and has periodically been mentioned in discussions about alternative presidential candidates.
