The Chief Judge of Cross River State, Justice Akon Ikpeme, has charged legal practitioners appointed as Notaries Public to uphold integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, stressing that only lawyers of proven character should be entrusted with the responsibility of authenticating legal documents.
Justice Ikpeme gave the charge while swearing in five legal practitioners as Notaries Public at the State High Court Complex in Calabar.
She described the office of a Notary Public as a sensitive one within the legal system, noting that it goes beyond ceremony and carries significant responsibility in the authentication and certification of legal documents used in official and commercial transactions.
Notaries Public play a vital role in the Nigerian legal system by certifying and authenticating documents such as affidavits, agreements, powers of attorney and other legal instruments required for official purposes.
While administering the oath, the Chief Judge warned the newly sworn-in officers not to treat the office as a mere title, but as a call to serve with honesty, diligence and a high sense of responsibility, adding that much is expected from those elevated to such a position.
One of the newly sworn-in officers, Barrister T. O. Teke expressed gratitude to God, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Chief Judge of Cross River State and the Nigerian Bar Association for the opportunity to serve.
“I am humbled by this appointment and I pledge to uphold the highest standards of integrity, diligence and professionalism in the discharge of my duties as Notary Public,” he said.
Teke added that he remains committed to facilitating justice and providing credible notarial services to the public and the legal community.
