Governor Bassey Otu has nominated Mr. Ayuk Obi Afor as the new Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture in Cross River State, filling the vacancy created by the death of the late Hon. Abubakar Robert Ewa.
The nomination, which has now been confirmed by the Cross River State House of Assembly, follows the governor's decision to retain the commissioner slot within the same constituency represented by the late Ewa. The move was widely commended by lawmakers, who described it as a demonstration of fairness and respect for the constituency's representation in the State Executive Council.
During the screening exercise, Ayuk Obi Afor was assessed by the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petitions and Conflict Resolution, which concluded that he possesses the qualifications, competence and experience required to serve as commissioner. The committee's recommendation was unanimously adopted during plenary before the House confirmed his appointment.
Following his confirmation, Afor thanked Governor Otu and members of the Assembly for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to serve with transparency, accountability and dedication while working to strengthen Cross River's tourism, arts and cultural sectors, which remain key pillars of the state's economic diversification agenda.
Governor Otu nominated Afor under Section 192(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to replace the late Hon. Abubakar Robert Ewa, who died in January 2025 while serving as Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture. The appointment formally restores the ministry to full leadership after months of vacancy.
