A group under the umbrella of the Veteran Journalists Forum in Cross River State has strongly condemned recent remarks made by public affairs commentator, Portrait Peterson, against the administration of Governor Bassey Otu.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Forum described Peterson's comments as unfair, misleading and lacking objectivity, insisting that the governor's performance should be assessed based on facts and visible achievements rather than political sentiments.
The group stated that although it is not an official mouthpiece of the state government, it felt compelled to respond to what it described as persistent attempts to downplay the progress recorded under Governor Otu's administration.
According to the Forum, the governor inherited significant economic and infrastructural challenges but has demonstrated commitment to repositioning the state through strategic interventions across various sectors.
The journalists highlighted improvements in environmental sanitation, noting that refuse heaps that previously littered parts of Calabar have been cleared, while drainage channels around major commercial areas, including Watt Market, have been rehabilitated to improve sanitation and reduce flooding.
The Forum also pointed to ongoing infrastructural development projects and efforts aimed at enhancing the state's image and strengthening governance. It cited the revitalization of public facilities, development of tourism-related assets and other initiatives designed to stimulate economic growth and improve public service delivery.
The group maintained that Governor Otu's administration has restored confidence in governance and deserves recognition for the progress achieved within its three years in office.
It further urged critics to adopt a balanced approach when assessing government performance, emphasizing that constructive criticism should be based on verifiable facts rather than what it described as politically motivated attacks.
The Forum concluded by calling on residents of the state to remain focused on development and support efforts aimed at advancing the collective interests of Cross River State.
