Governor Bassey Otu has unveiled ambitious plans to expand the economic and cultural footprint of Carnival Calabar, with a renewed focus on international partnerships, diaspora engagement, digital monetization, and tourism-driven investment.
The governor disclosed this during the official unveiling of the 2026 Carnival Calabar theme in Lagos, where he described the annual festival as a strategic economic platform rather than just a cultural celebration.
According to Otu, the state government is working to position Carnival Calabar as a globally recognized tourism brand capable of attracting investors, visitors, and corporate partnerships from across the world.
He said the administration intends to deepen the involvement of Cross River indigenes in the diaspora while leveraging international collaborations to increase the carnival’s global visibility.
The governor also revealed plans to introduce new digital revenue streams through live streaming and the commercialization of carnival-related content, a move aimed at expanding the festival’s economic value beyond physical attendance.
Reflecting on the 20th anniversary edition of the carnival held in 2025, Otu noted that the event recorded significant participation from tourists and stakeholders, with activities spanning over 30 days.
He commended sponsors, corporate organizations, carnival bands, and other partners for their contributions to the success and sustainability of what is widely regarded as Africa’s biggest street party.
Otu further called on investors and private sector stakeholders to continue supporting the festival, stressing that Carnival Calabar remains a powerful tool for economic growth, job creation, cultural promotion, and tourism development in Cross River State.
The state government says the expanded vision for the carnival is expected to strengthen Cross River’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading tourism destinations while creating new opportunities for local businesses and creative industry players.
