Cross River Fishermen Cry Out Over Loss of Fishing Rights in Calabar Waterways

Many fishermen from coastal communities in Cross River State have raised serious concerns over what they describe as the gradual loss of their fishing rights in the Calabar waterways.

The fishermen said they can no longer fish freely in areas where they have worked for many years. According to them, several parts of the waterways have allegedly been taken over by individuals and groups who now prevent local fishermen from carrying out their daily activities.

Some of the affected fishermen claimed that they are often chased away by armed men whenever they try to enter certain fishing areas. They alleged that some of these people include Fulani herders and foreign nationals who have reportedly taken control of sections of the waterways.

The fishermen said the situation has greatly affected their source of income. Many families who depend on fishing for food and survival are now struggling because they return home with little or no catch after spending long hours on the water.

They explained that fishing is the only occupation many of them know and that the current situation is pushing many households deeper into poverty. According to them, they can no longer provide for their families as they used to.

The affected communities appealed to the Cross River State Government, the Federal Government, security agencies and other relevant authorities to urgently investigate the matter and restore their right to fish freely in the waterways.

They warned that if nothing is done quickly, the hardship in the coastal communities could become worse, as many youths and families depend entirely on fishing for their livelihood.

The fishermen called on the government to protect the waterways, ensure that local fishermen are not intimidated, and guarantee that everyone can peacefully carry out their lawful business without fear.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the relevant authorities regarding the allegations made by the fishermen.
