The Cross River State Government has taken fresh steps to end the communal crisis between Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area by meeting with political, traditional and security leaders from both communities.
The peace meeting was held on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Biase Local Government Council Headquarters. It was presided over by the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey.
The meeting brought together the Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, Hon. Yibala Inyang, the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, HRM Obol Ofem Ubana, the Obol Lopon of Idomi, HRM Obol Ofem Inah Edet, traditional chiefs, political leaders, security chiefs, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, the State Security Adviser, Major General (Rtd.) Obono Okoi Ubi, and the Chairman of Biase Local Government Area, Hon. Eyong Edordi Edordi.
Speaking during the meeting, Deputy Governor Peter Odey strongly condemned the loss of lives and destruction of property caused by the recent communal clash. He assured both communities that the state government would provide support to families and individuals affected by the violence.
He also warned that anyone or any group trying to continue the conflict would face the full weight of the law.
According to the Deputy Governor, the boundary report prepared by the Surveyor General of the state, Surveyor Patrick Edet Bassey, has been officially approved by the government.
The report allocates 45 percent of the disputed land to Ugep, 40 percent to Idomi, while the remaining 15 percent has been reserved as a government buffer zone.
He explained that no individual or community is allowed to farm or carry out any activity on the 15 percent government land, warning that anyone who does so would be treated as a trespasser.
The Deputy Governor stressed that the Cross River State Government would not allow another breakdown of law and order in the area. He urged both communities to respect the approved land boundaries and live peacefully with one another.
He also thanked the traditional rulers, political leaders and community representatives from Ugep and Idomi for embracing dialogue and showing commitment to restoring peace.
The meeting ended with renewed calls for both communities to maintain peace and avoid actions that could trigger another round of violence, as the state government also announced a relaxation of the curfew earlier imposed on the affected communities.
