The issue surrounding the alleged owner of a popular anonymous Snapchat account in Calabar has taken a fresh turn, as new allegations linking a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly continue to spark widespread reactions across the state.

Hon. Cyril James Omini, who represents Yakurr I State Constituency, has been accused on social media of allegedly promising ₦5 million to anyone who could help identify and produce the young woman behind the anonymous Snapchat account after she allegedly made posts about him.

The matter became more controversial after Cross River-based activist MC Okrika shared videos online and alleged that the young woman was picked up from her residence by some men and taken to the lawmaker's residence.

According to the activist, the young girl was beaten at the residence before she was later handed over to security operatives. Videos circulating on social media have further fueled the controversy, although the exact circumstances surrounding the incident have not been officially confirmed.

MC Okrika has also called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate Hon. Cyril James Omini over the allegations. According to the activist, the incident should be treated as an alleged case of harassment, intimidation and abuse of a poor and helpless young woman. He maintained that anyone found to have played a role in the alleged assault or unlawful treatment of the lady should be investigated and made to face the law.

The incident has sparked outrage across Cross River State, with many residents condemning what they describe as intimidation and the alleged use of violence against a young woman over activities on social media.

Many Cross Riverians have argued that if anyone believed they had been defamed through anonymous online posts, the matter should have been handled through lawful means instead of alleged violence or public humiliation.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command has clarified that it is not investigating the matter. According to the Command, credible information available to it indicates that the case is being handled by the Department of State Services (DSS).

As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not released an official statement on the allegations or the status of its investigation. Likewise, Hon. Cyril James Omini has not publicly responded to the claims circulating on social media.

The incident continues to dominate discussions across Calabar and other parts of Cross River State, with many residents calling for a transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure that anyone found to have acted outside the law is held accountable.
