The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor, while running an illegal mobile clinic and collecting money from members of the public with fake promises of getting jobs.
According to the police, the suspect was arrested by officers from Uwanse Division in Calabar South after a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, reported that he collected ₦500,000 from her. She alleged that the suspect promised to secure employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), but the promise later turned out to be false.
Police said their preliminary investigation showed that the suspect allegedly used the fake claim of being a doctor to deceive the woman into paying the money. Some medical equipment and other items believed to be connected to the case were also recovered during the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full investigation to determine the extent of the suspect's activities and to find out if more people were allegedly defrauded in a similar way. The suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court if investigations reveal enough evidence.
The police also called on residents of Cross River State to be careful of people who promise jobs in government institutions in exchange for money. The Command said anyone who may have had dealings with the suspect should report to the nearest police station, assuring the public that more updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
