The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a 250-capacity multi-purpose town hall and two solar-powered boreholes in Kutia Village, Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, in a move aimed at improving access to clean water and strengthening peace and unity within the community.
The projects were inaugurated as part of the Navy's civil-military cooperation programme, designed to improve the welfare of host communities while fostering stronger relationships between security agencies and residents.
Speaking during the commissioning, the Chief of Naval Staff, represented at the event, said the newly constructed town hall would serve as a centre for community meetings, educational programmes, cultural activities, youth empowerment initiatives and peaceful conflict resolution.
According to him, the facility is expected to promote peace, security and social cohesion, while providing a platform for community development and dialogue.
The two solar-powered boreholes are expected to provide residents with reliable access to safe drinking water, reducing the burden of water scarcity and improving sanitation and public health in Kutia Village and neighbouring communities.
The traditional ruler of the community expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Navy, describing the intervention as a long-awaited project. He said the town hall would become a symbol of unity where residents could meet to resolve disputes peacefully and discuss issues affecting the community.
He added that the provision of clean water would improve the quality of life for residents, especially women and children who often travel long distances in search of potable water.
Residents who attended the inauguration welcomed the projects, expressing hope that more government agencies and development partners would extend similar interventions to other underserved communities across Cross River State.
The commissioning of the town hall and solar-powered boreholes is expected to improve access to clean water, enhance public health, encourage youth engagement and strengthen peaceful coexistence in Kutia Village and the wider Obudu Local Government Area.
