The Cross River State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the sudden and unnatural death of a woman, identified as Blessing Ayebe, whose lifeless body was discovered inside a church toilet in Calabar.

According to information made available to Boki Blog Africa, the deceased attended a church service at the Presbyterian Church, Ikot Ansa Parish, on Saturday, June 28, 2026. However, she never returned home after the service, leaving family members worried about her whereabouts.

The tragic discovery was made around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, when her body was found inside the church toilet.

The incident was officially reported to the Federal Housing Police Station on July 1 by her daughter, Peace Minka Ayebe, after she was informed by her brother, Saviour Ayebe, about their mother's death.

Police officers visited the scene and carried out a preliminary examination of the body. According to the police, no visible marks of violence or injuries were found on the deceased during the initial inspection.

Blessing Ayebe was subsequently taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where medical personnel confirmed her dead. Her body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Responding to the incident, the Cross River State Police Command stated that the matter is being treated as a case of sudden and unnatural death.

In an official response, the police said:

"The case is under investigation. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy to determine the cause of death. No suspect has been identified or arrested at this stage, as there is presently no evidence of foul play. Investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated as they unfold."

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while detectives continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.
