Governor Bassey Otu Continues ₦11.5bn Boki East–West Road Project Amid Concerns Over Absence of Drainage

The ongoing Boki East–West Road project in Cross River State has continued to attract public attention, with growing concerns from residents over the apparent absence of drainage infrastructure along sections of the road currently under construction.

The project, being executed by the Cross River State Government through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, is one of the flagship road projects of Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu's administration. The entire 28-kilometre road has a budget allocation of approximately ₦11.5 billion, while the ongoing phase covers about 17 kilometres.

Residents and stakeholders have expressed fears that constructing the road without a proper drainage system could affect its durability, especially considering Boki's heavy rainfall and rainforest environment. They argue that while the road itself is widely welcomed, the absence of drainage channels may expose the pavement to erosion and water damage over time.

Some residents described the project as one that could deliver a good road but a flawed outcome if adequate drainage is not incorporated before completion. They have called on Governor Bassey Otu to urgently draw the contractor's attention to the issue and ensure that proper drainage infrastructure forms part of the project.

According to them, Boki's unique geographical and climatic conditions make drainage an essential component of any major road construction. Without it, they fear the road may struggle to withstand the test of time despite the huge financial investment.

The concerns come as the Cross River State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure intensified its quality assurance efforts on the project.

On Saturday, July 5, 2026, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Dr. Ankpo Pius Edet, led an inspection of the ongoing 17-kilometre Boki East–West (Boje) Road project. He was accompanied by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Engr. Dr. Paul Bapeh, alongside engineers and other technical personnel.

According to the Ministry, the inspection was conducted to assess the progress of work and ensure that the contractor complies with approved engineering standards and specifications.

Speaking during the inspection, the Commissioner said the exercise was aimed at verifying that all construction materials being used meet the required standards for strength, durability and long-term performance.

Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet reaffirmed Governor Bassey Otu's commitment to delivering quality and durable infrastructure across Cross River State. He noted that continuous project monitoring and strict quality control are necessary to guarantee value for public funds and ensure the successful execution of road projects.

The Commissioner also stressed the need for strict supervision and technical oversight throughout the construction process, assuring residents that the state government would not compromise on quality as it continues to deliver what it described as the dividends of democracy.

Despite these assurances, questions remain among residents over whether adequate drainage infrastructure will be incorporated into the project before completion. Many believe addressing the issue now would help protect the road from premature deterioration and ensure that the multi-billion-naira investment serves communities in Boki for decades.
