The countdown to the much-anticipated Carnival Calabar 2026 is gathering momentum, with 136 days remaining to December 26, when the main Cultural Carnival is scheduled to take place in Calabar, Cross River State.
With the theme “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny,” this year's carnival is expected to once again transform the streets of Calabar into a major centre of culture, entertainment, creativity and celebration, attracting residents, visitors and carnival lovers from different parts of Nigeria and beyond.
The December 26 Cultural Carnival is one of the major highlights of the 2026 programme, coming just days before the Street Party/Colour Run scheduled for December 30.
Ahead of the December celebrations, a series of activities have been lined up to build the carnival atmosphere and keep Cross Riverians engaged. These include dry runs, cultural activities, the Night of Kings and Queens, Junior Carnival, Parade of the Bands and Bikers Carnival.
As part of the preparations, the Carnival Fitness Jam will hold this Saturday, August 15, at 6:00am at the Mary Slessor Adjudication Point, Mary Slessor Roundabout.
The fitness event is expected to combine exercise, fun and carnival vibes, with organisers calling on residents to come with their workout partners and get fit ahead of Carnival Calabar 2026.
For Calabar, the countdown is no longer just about a date on the calendar. It is the gradual build-up of the atmosphere, costumes, music, cultural displays, rehearsals and street activities that have continued to make the carnival a major attraction.
With 136 days to December 26, the city is gradually moving into carnival mode as preparations intensify for what promises to be another colourful celebration of Cross River's culture and hospitality.
The message from the countdown is clear: Calabar is getting ready, and the road to the 2026 carnival street celebrations has officially entered another phase.
