Former Cross River State Governor and presidential candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has said his record in Cross River State remains evidence of his commitment to building strong institutions and leaving public office better than he met it.
Duke, who governed Cross River State from 1999 to 2007, made the declaration while speaking on his plans ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former governor said his experience in Cross River had shown that government could be driven by competence, merit and accountability rather than political loyalty.
According to him, if elected president, his administration would appoint competent Nigerians into government positions based on their ability to deliver rather than their role during political campaigns.
“Politics ends after the election. Governance begins with assembling the best hands to move the country forward,” Duke said.
He argued that political supporters should not automatically expect government appointments after elections, stressing that those entrusted with public offices must have the capacity and integrity to deliver results.
Duke also called for major reforms in Nigeria’s economy, financial system, energy sector and justice system.
He criticised high interest rates, rising public debt and what he described as misplaced government spending, saying more attention should be given to electricity, agriculture, healthcare, education and the judiciary.
The PRP candidate maintained that Nigeria has enough human and natural resources to achieve rapid development if the country is governed with discipline, competence and accountability.
For many Cross Riverians, Duke’s renewed presidential bid is also likely to bring his eight-year administration back into public discussion as voters assess whether his record in the state can translate into a convincing national campaign ahead of 2027.
Duke, however, is seeking to make the argument that his past performance is not merely a campaign slogan but evidence of the kind of leadership he intends to provide at the national level.
His message comes as political activities and positioning for the 2027 presidential election continue to gather momentum across Nigeria.
