The Cross River State Government has intensified efforts to reposition the iconic Obudu Ranch as a major livestock production and tourism hub, as part of a broader partnership with the Federal Government aimed at strengthening Nigeria's livestock value chain.
The renewed commitment was reaffirmed during the commissioning of the country's first Livestock Control Post and Guarantee Facility at Mfum in Ikom Local Government Area, where both federal and state officials outlined plans to unlock the state's enormous livestock potential.
Representing Governor Bassey Otu at the event, Deputy Governor Peter Odey said the administration is determined to transform Cross River into a leading destination for commercial livestock production, ranching, meat processing, and export.
According to him, the revival of Obudu Ranch is central to the state's economic diversification agenda. He explained that the government is engaging investors to modernise the ranch with facilities capable of supporting large-scale cattle breeding, dairy production, animal health services, and livestock processing.
Odey noted that Cross River's favourable climate, vast grazing land, and strategic location bordering Cameroon place the state in a strong position to become a major livestock hub in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
The newly commissioned Livestock Control Post at Mfum is expected to strengthen animal health surveillance, regulate livestock movement, improve food safety, and facilitate cross-border trade. The facility is also expected to curb the spread of animal diseases while enhancing confidence in livestock exports.
Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, commended the Cross River State Government for taking proactive steps toward developing the livestock sector. He described the state as one of Nigeria's most promising destinations for livestock investment and disclosed that the Federal Government is assessing existing facilities, including Obudu Ranch, for possible rehabilitation and private sector participation.
Stakeholders believe the planned revival of Obudu Ranch could generate thousands of jobs for young people, attract local and foreign investors, boost agricultural productivity, and stimulate economic activities across the state.
For many residents, the initiative represents a renewed opportunity to restore the glory of Obudu Ranch while positioning Cross River as a key player in Nigeria's livestock industry. If fully implemented, the project is expected to drive sustainable economic growth, improve food security, and expand the state's role in regional livestock trade.
