The Cross River State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding an incident involving two young men in Bunyia Irruan Community, Boki Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the two young men, identified as Suahnen Lorlumun, 17, and Sekeghshie Silas, 17, were brought to the Okubuchi Police Outpost by the Clan Head of Bunyia Irruan.
The police said the teenagers were brought to the outpost for their safety following concerns that they could be lynched by youths in the area.
The clarification comes after reports emerged from the community concerning the two young men, with allegations linking them to the alleged disappearance of a five-year-old boy.
The Command, however, did not confirm the alleged kidnapping in its statement, but said the two teenagers were later released into the custody of the Clan Head.
ASP Akata further disclosed that the teenagers were released in the company of three officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) from Calabar.
The development has therefore raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the initial allegations and what led to the youths being targeted by members of the community.
The Police Command has urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and allow security agencies to properly investigate allegations of crime.
