Over 500 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abanwan-Erei community, Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, have reportedly defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The mass defection took place during a political gathering in the community, where the defectors were received by the PDP candidate for the Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency, Barr. Bassey O. Bassey, popularly known as BOB, and the party’s House of Assembly candidate, Pastor Hon. Obia Ikika.
The development is being described by PDP supporters as a major boost for the party’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors reportedly cited dissatisfaction with the APC and what they described as unfulfilled promises as reasons for abandoning the ruling party.
Speaking at the event, Bassey welcomed the new members into the PDP and assured them of equal participation and recognition within the party.
He said the growing movement was an indication that more people were looking towards the PDP for a new political direction.
Pastor Ikika also welcomed the defectors, describing their decision as a demonstration of the people’s desire for change and better representation.
The event was attended by several PDP stakeholders and ward leaders, who hailed the development as evidence of growing grassroots support for the party in Biase.
With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of 2027, the latest defection could further intensify the political contest between the APC and PDP in the constituency.
