Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has drawn a clear line between his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election and the political battles governors and other politicians will face in their respective states.
Wike said he would mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election but would not take responsibility for helping politicians win governorship and other state-level elections.
According to him, politicians should be prepared to fight their own political battles in their states rather than expecting his support for Tinubu to translate into support for their individual electoral ambitions.
Wike’s position also recognises the right of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to field candidates in the 2027 governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.
“What I said and stand for is that I will mobilise support for the re-election of the President. I never promised anyone that PDP will not field candidates to contest governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor maintained that supporting Tinubu for president does not mean that he has abandoned his political identity or that the PDP will stop participating in other elections.
He explained that the political arrangement supporting Tinubu should not be interpreted as an agreement by all parties involved to surrender their candidates or structures in state and legislative contests.
Wike also stressed the importance of grassroots politics, arguing that politicians should focus on mobilising voters at the polling-unit level rather than assuming that support for a presidential candidate will automatically translate into victories for other candidates.
