The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a 14-day strike at the Cross River University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa, disrupting academic activities at the institution.
The industrial action, according to reports, followed the failure of relevant authorities to address several demands raised by the union, including issues surrounding unpaid salary arrears and the implementation of agreed conditions of service.
ASUU-UEE is also demanding the implementation of the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), compliance with the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and the implementation of the approved retirement age for professors.
The union also raised concerns over inadequate staffing and the workload being placed on existing academic staff, saying the situation has affected effective teaching and learning at the university.
The 14-day action is expected to affect lectures and other academic activities as the union presses the institution and the state government to address its grievances.
The Cross River University of Education and Entrepreneurship, located in Akamkpa, was established by the Cross River State Government to succeed the former College of Education, Akamkpa. The institution received recognition from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2025.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over unresolved salary and agreement-related issues in Nigerian universities, with ASUU recently warning that failure by governments to honour outstanding commitments could trigger further industrial action.
Students and parents in Cross River will now be watching closely to see whether the outstanding issues are resolved before the 14-day strike expires, or whether the dispute could lead to a prolonged disruption of the university's academic calendar.
