Archbishop Emmah Gospel Isong has cautioned political leaders against reckless and inflammatory public statements, warning that careless words can have consequences for those who make them.
Isong gave the warning during an interdenominational thanksgiving service held at the Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI), Faith Mansion World Centre, Ikot Eneobong, 8 Miles, Calabar, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The service attracted government officials, political leaders, traditional rulers, security chiefs, church leaders and worshippers.
In his message, the Archbishop, who is also the National Publicity Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), stressed the importance of controlling one's words, particularly for people occupying public offices.
He noted that political office holders would eventually leave office, urging them to be mindful of what they say and how they conduct themselves while in power.
Isong also called for responsible criticism of government, distinguishing between criticism intended to hold leaders accountable and attacks aimed at pulling them down.
He further cautioned against wishing for the downfall of others, urging citizens and political actors to avoid hatred, unforgiveness and statements that could deepen divisions.
The cleric's remarks came amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political actors across Nigeria increasingly using public rallies, religious gatherings and other platforms to communicate with supporters.
Representing Governor Bassey Edet Otu at the service, Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, said the state should not be reduced to a subject of ridicule and called for prayers for wisdom, peace and the wellbeing of the people.
The Cross River State Government also said the governor urged Nigerians to embrace unity, reject violence and engage in constructive efforts toward national development.
The thanksgiving service featured prayers for Nigeria, Cross River State, political leaders, security personnel and citizens, with religious leaders calling for peace and responsible citizenship.
