The Wife of the Cross River State Governor, Bishop Eyoanwan-Itam Bassey Otu, has concluded the 11th edition of her free medical outreach, with 167 major and minor surgeries performed for residents of the Northern Senatorial District.
The outreach was held at the General Hospital, Okpoma, in Yala Local Government Area, in collaboration with Faith Care International, as part of efforts to provide access to healthcare for vulnerable residents, particularly those in rural communities.
Beyond the surgeries, the programme recorded 1,697 general consultations, 530 eye consultations, 82 dental care services and 253 laboratory investigations. A total of 232 pairs of eyeglasses were also distributed to beneficiaries.
According to the Office of the Governor’s wife, the initiative is designed to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on residents, especially people who require surgical procedures but cannot afford the cost.
The Special Assistant to the Governor’s wife on Non-Governmental Organisation, Jeffery Adamade, said beneficiaries had shared testimonies of how the programme had changed their lives, particularly those who had previously abandoned hope of receiving surgery because of financial difficulties.
The Nigeria Chapter Director of Faith Care International, Prof. Monday Yikuldi, commended Mrs Otu for her interest in improving the health and welfare of residents. He also called on philanthropists in Cross River to support initiatives aimed at providing healthcare to people who have limited access to medical services.
Yala Local Government Area Chairman, Dr. Fred Okem, also expressed appreciation for the outreach, saying it had brought medical services directly to vulnerable people in the area at no cost.
One of the beneficiaries, Sonia Odum, who underwent thyroidectomy for goitre, thanked the Governor’s wife for the intervention, saying the free surgery had helped restore her hope and put a smile on her face.
The latest outreach adds to the series of free medical interventions organised through the Governor’s wife’s initiative, with the programme targeting residents who might otherwise struggle to afford treatment.
