Nigeria’s total public debt stock has risen to N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, according to the latest figures released by the Debt Management Office (DMO).
The new figure represents an increase of N7.44 trillion from the N159.35 trillion recorded at the end of March 2026.
The DMO’s latest data showed that domestic debt accounted for N91.59 trillion, representing 54.91 per cent of the country’s total debt, while external debt stood at about N75.20 trillion.
In dollar terms, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at $120.93 billion as of June 30, 2026. The external component was converted using the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official exchange rate of N1,379.1842 to the dollar at the end of the period.
The Federal Government accounted for the largest share of the country’s debt, with total obligations of N152.77 trillion.
Of this amount, N86.99 trillion was domestic debt, while N65.77 trillion represented external debt.
State governments and the Federal Capital Territory accounted for the remaining N14.01 trillion, comprising N4.59 trillion in domestic debt and N9.42 trillion in external obligations.
Federal Government bonds remained the largest component of domestic borrowing, standing at N64.84 trillion, or 74.53 per cent of the FGN’s domestic debt.
Nigerian Treasury Bills followed with N19.48 trillion, representing 22.39 per cent.
Other instruments included FGN Sukuk, promissory notes, savings bonds and green bonds.
The latest figures cover Nigeria’s public debt position at the end of the second quarter of 2026 and were published by the DMO on September 25, 2026.
