Cross River-born Activist and Social media commentator, Assam Micheal Okongor, popularly known as MC Okrika, has criticised former Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba over what he described as “12 years of wasted opportunity” in the central senatorial district.

Ndoma-Egba represented Cross River Central in the Nigerian Senate for three consecutive terms, from 2003 to 2015. He later served as Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2016 and 2019.

In his statement titled “The 12 Years of Wasted Opportunity: How Senator Ndoma-Egba Failed Cross River Central,” Okrika questioned what he described as the level of development that came to Cross River Central during Ndoma-Egba’s years in the National Assembly and subsequent leadership position at the NDDC.

He pointed to roads, water, healthcare, jobs and youth empowerment as some of the areas where he believes the senatorial district still faces serious challenges.

According to MC Okrika, communities across Yakurr, Abi, Obubra, Etung, Ikom and Boki continue to face development problems, particularly in road infrastructure.

He specifically raised concerns about roads linking communities within and around the Central Senatorial District, arguing that residents have continued to experience difficulties with transportation despite the years Ndoma-Egba spent in national politics.

On water supply, Okrika also questioned the state of water projects in parts of the district. He argued that many residents still depend on streams and other local sources for water.

The concerned citizen further criticised the state of healthcare and employment opportunities in the district, asking what he described as a “powerful political figure” was able to achieve for young people and communities during his years in Abuja.

“12 years is enough to build a new Central, but we have nothing to show for it,” Okrika said.

He argued that Cross River Central needs political leaders who will not only participate actively in Abuja but will also ensure that tangible development reaches their communities.

However, the claims contained in the statement are the views and criticisms of MC Okrika and were not independently established in the statement. Ndoma-Egba's record also includes his role as Deputy Senate Leader from 2007 to 2011 and Senate Leader from 2011 to 2015, before his appointment as NDDC Chairman in 2016.

The statement has therefore reopened discussion about the development record of past political representatives from Cross River Central and what residents should expect from those seeking to represent the district.
