The Hausa community in Ofatura, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, has pledged its support for the NDC candidate for Cross River Central Senatorial District, Rt. Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The community also expressed support for the Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket, citing the economic hardship and security challenges confronting Nigerians as reasons for the need for a change in leadership.
The commitment was made during an interactive meeting between Bassey Eko Ewa and members of the Hausa community in Ofatura, where the senatorial candidate solicited their support for his candidacy and the presidential ticket.
Speaking at the meeting, Ewa focused on the economic difficulties facing Nigerians, particularly the declining purchasing power and the challenges confronting families and businesses.
He argued that the country requires a different approach to governance and expressed support for the Peter Obi–Kwankwaso ticket, which he said could focus on economic recovery, improved security and sustainable development.
Responding on behalf of the Hausa community, its leader, Alhaji Lawal, called for what he described as a change in national leadership.
Lawal said insecurity, particularly kidnapping, had badly affected the community's businesses and livelihoods. He disclosed that some members of the community were still being held by kidnappers, describing the situation as a major concern for residents.
He also spoke about the relationship between the Hausa community and Bassey Eko Ewa, describing the senatorial candidate as a leader who had remained accessible and maintained a cordial relationship with members of the community.
According to Lawal, Ewa's longstanding acts of support and benevolence towards members of the Hausa community would not be forgotten.
The community's Youth Leader also reaffirmed their commitment to Ewa, saying their votes in the 2027 election would serve as an expression of appreciation for the goodwill they said he had shown towards them.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the candidate and community members to discuss the economic and security concerns affecting them, while also setting the stage for political engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Hausa community's pledge adds another layer to the emerging political engagements across Cross River Central as candidates and political parties continue to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
