The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the reported attack and disruption of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign activities in Calabar South, Cross River State.

The NDC said the incident, which happened on Friday during the PDP’s consultation with traditional rulers and stakeholders, was disturbing and should not be allowed to become a pattern as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections increase.

The PDP campaign, led by its governorship candidate, Sir Arthur Javis-Archibong, was reportedly disrupted at two locations — the Palace of the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South and the African Club along Calabar Road.

According to reports, three people were injured during the disturbance at the palace, while vehicles belonging to PDP members and supporters were reportedly damaged at the African Club. The PDP also alleged that gunshots were fired during the incidents.

Reacting to the development, the NDC State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Cletus Amawu, called for an impartial investigation into the incident, particularly the conduct and response of security agencies.

The party said political parties and candidates must be allowed to meet with citizens peacefully without intimidation or obstruction.

The NDC also called on the Cross River State Police Command and other security agencies to remain neutral and professional in handling political activities.

The party appealed to Governor Bassey Otu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to promote political tolerance and ensure that opposition parties are allowed to carry out their lawful activities.

The NDC further urged political parties and their supporters to avoid retaliation, saying political disagreements should be settled through dialogue and the democratic process.

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed awareness of the incidents and said it deployed personnel to the affected areas. The Command said it was verifying reports of gunfire, injuries and property damage.

The APC has denied involvement in the incident, while the police investigation is ongoing.

The NDC commended the PDP team for reportedly restraining its supporters from retaliating and instead seeking protection from the Commissioner of Police.

The party said Cross River’s reputation for peace should be protected as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
