The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has raised concern over the poor condition of some public schools across the state, calling for urgent government action.

The journalists made the call in a communique issued after their monthly congress held at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar.

According to the NUJ, some public schools across Cross River are in a deplorable condition and require urgent intervention to bring them up to acceptable and modern educational standards.

The union therefore called on the relevant government agencies to urgently address the situation, including considering a state of emergency in severely affected schools.

The call is coming at a time when concerns over the condition of public infrastructure, especially schools in rural communities, continue to attract attention from residents and stakeholders.

The journalists also raised concerns over the condition of several roads within Calabar metropolis, urging the state government to rehabilitate them to make movement easier for residents and motorists.

The NUJ further appealed to residents to stop dumping refuse at unauthorised places and called for greater community responsibility in keeping Calabar clean.

The union also urged practising journalists across the state to pay more attention to their health by going for regular medical check-ups.
