The Cross River State Police Command has responded to growing concerns over alleged renewed tension between the Ovonum and Ofatura communities in Obubra Local Government Area, assuring residents that peace has been restored following its intervention.

Speaking to Boki Blog Africa, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command confirmed that a communal misunderstanding recently occurred between both communities.

According to the Command, the incident began following reports of alleged cassava theft but was later discovered to be connected to an underlying land dispute between the two communities.

The Police stated that upon receiving the report, security authorities immediately intervened to prevent any possible escalation of the situation.

Following the intervention of the Command, representatives and stakeholders from both communities were brought into a peaceful dialogue where they reportedly agreed to embrace peace and avoid taking laws into their hands.

The Command further urged residents and youths of both communities to remain calm, maintain peace, and refrain from spreading panic or engaging in actions capable of disrupting public order.

The development comes amid earlier social media reports and viral clips alleging that youths from the communities were mobilising for possible attacks, raising fears of another communal crisis in the area.

Residents have continued to call for sustained peace efforts and security monitoring to ensure that tensions do not escalate into violence.
