The Cross River State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of harassment and extortion involving officers attached to the Etung Divisional Headquarters following the circulation of a viral social media video.
The allegations were made public by social media influencer, Mc Okrika, who accused the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Etung Division and some personnel of allegedly harassing and extorting two individuals identified as Israel Nwafor and Abraham Friday.
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the incident reportedly occurred on May 13, 2026, at a security nipping point close to the Etung Divisional Headquarters.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, expressed concern over the allegations and ordered an immediate inquiry into the matter.
The Command stated that any officer found culpable after investigations would face disciplinary action in line with existing police regulations and procedures.
“The Commissioner of Police has also directed that the said individuals be invited to the Command Headquarters for an interview to enable the Command obtain firsthand information and ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the matter,” the statement read.
The Police Command further emphasized the strategic security importance of Etung Local Government Area, noting that the area shares a border with the Republic of Cameroon and faces persistent security concerns linked to cross-border crimes, illegal movements, and the activities of armed foreign groups, including Ambazonian separatist elements.
While stressing the need for proactive security operations within the border communities, the Command maintained that allegations of harassment, extortion, and unprofessional conduct by officers would not be tolerated.
The statement reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights, and the protection of lives and property across Cross River State.
The development has continued to generate reactions online, with many residents calling for a transparent investigation and accountability if the allegations are confirmed.
