The United Nations has revealed that armed drone strikes have become the leading cause of civilian deaths in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, accounting for more than 80 percent of conflict-related fatalities recorded in the first four months of 2026.
According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 880 civilians were killed in drone-related attacks between January and April, with the majority of the deaths reported in the Kordofan region.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the growing use of drones in the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Türk warned that the conflict could enter an even more dangerous phase if urgent steps are not taken to protect civilians and reduce hostilities. He also urged all sides involved in the fighting to guarantee the safe passage of civilians fleeing conflict zones.
Sudan’s conflict, now entering its fourth year, continues to trigger a worsening humanitarian crisis, with thousands killed and millions displaced across the country.
