Legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is set to make history as the first African artist to receive a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nearly three decades after his death.

The Recording Academy said that Fela is being honored posthumously for his contribution to modern Nigerian Afrobeats and for inspiring many global singers.

Fela's radical blend of politics, performance, and pan-African groove still drives contemporary culture as Afrobeats dominates worldwide charts.

In 2024, the Grammy Awards introduced a category for Best African Performance, following the global success of Afrobeats. Burna Boy is also nominated for the Best Global Music Album award this year.
