United States Suspend Immigration Visas for Several African Countries

The processing of US immigrant visas for nationals from dozens of African countries has been indefinitely suspended. The African nations were part of a list of 75 countries announced by the US Department of State on Wednesday.

In Liberia, one of the affected countries, the decision caused mixed emotions, with some expressing anger and frustration. Some analysts say it is proof that the new US administration is "unpredictable" for targeting one of its longstanding traditional allies in the region.

The Liberian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has, however, sought to calm public anxiety, stressing that the measure does not amount to a total visa ban and does not affect non-immigrant travel.

Kenyans were reportedly relieved by the country's exclusion from the list, despite most of East Africa being affected. The suspension takes effect on January 21, 2026.
