Incumbent Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has taken an early lead with preliminary results, while his main presidential election challenger, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, is in second position.

Voting hours had to be extended after technical glitches at several poll stations. The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said the extension was intended to compensate for time lost earlier in the day and ensure that no voter is disenfranchised.

MTN Uganda faces pressure to restore connectivity for the government-ordered internet shutdown ordered two days before voting, as the communications blackout raised questions about transparency in an election where Museveni seeks his seventh term after nearly four decades in power.
