The Cross River State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has elected members of its State Working Committee (SWC) as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and reposition the party ahead of future elections.
The party said the move was aimed at consolidating its structure across the 18 local government areas of the state while preparing members for forthcoming primaries and other electoral activities.
The election took place during the party’s state congress held at Danic Hotel in Calabar.
Speaking after the congress, the State Chairman of the party, John Ogar, said the newly elected executives would help deepen the party’s presence across wards and local government areas in the state.
Ogar explained that the congress was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and backed by a court judgment affirming the powers of state executives to organise congresses.
He dismissed reports suggesting that the party was divided, insisting that the ADC remained united despite recent internal disagreements.
“We don’t have factions in ADC. What happened was an attempt by some persons to usurp powers, but the court affirmed that existing state executives have the constitutional authority to conduct congresses,” he stated.
The chairman noted that the party was already preparing for its primaries and subsequent elections, adding that the newly elected State Working Committee would play a key role in grassroots mobilisation.
According to him, the national leadership of the party had also initiated reconciliation efforts to resolve lingering disputes in some state chapters.
He disclosed that consultations were held with stakeholders and local government chairmen before the congress to ensure a peaceful and inclusive process.
“We are moving into the primaries after this congress. The party remains strong and focused. What we need now is mobilisation and unity at the grassroots,” Ogar added.
He further assured party members that all processes relating to the primaries would be completed within the timetable provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
