The Cross River State Police Command has denied allegations of intimidation levelled against popular social media content creator and activist, MC Okrika, following claims that officers were targeting him over videos he posted alleging police misconduct in Etung Local Government Area.
In a press statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command described the allegations as misleading and insisted that officers were not after the content creator because of his criticism of the police.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Rashid B. Afegbua, had earlier directed that the allegations contained in the viral videos be investigated in line with the Command’s commitment to accountability and professionalism.
The Police, however, clarified that the officers reportedly seeking MC Okrika were investigators attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, handling a separate petition allegedly filed by Michael Etaba.
The petition reportedly borders on allegations of cyberstalking, malicious cyber harassment, character assassination, and incitement of public disorder through the alleged dissemination of false information.
The Command stressed that the investigation into the petition began before the circulation of the viral video accusing police officers of extortion and misconduct.
Police authorities also denied reports that officers searched the activist’s residence, stating that no search was conducted during efforts to reach him in connection with the ongoing investigation.
According to the statement, no action was taken against MC Okrika because of his comments or publications concerning the police.
The Command further disclosed that MC Okrika and his legal counsel have been invited to the State Command Headquarters in Calabar on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as part of ongoing investigations into the matter.
The Police reiterated their commitment to protecting citizens’ rights, including freedom of expression, while ensuring that all petitions and complaints are handled professionally and within the confines of the law.
