A new report by SBM Intelligence has ranked Cross River State as the worst state in Nigeria in terms of quality of life, raising fresh concerns over living conditions, public services and infrastructure in the state.
The report, which surveyed residents across eight states and the Federal Capital Territory between April and May 2026, assessed several key indicators including safety, healthcare, education, electricity supply, affordability, housing and social support systems.
According to the findings, Cross River finished at the bottom in 11 out of the 15 categories measured, making it the poorest-performing state among all locations surveyed.
Researchers described the state’s performance as alarming, citing widespread dissatisfaction among residents over insecurity, poor healthcare delivery, weak educational standards and the rising cost of living.
The report also noted that Cross River recorded one of the lowest safety ratings in the country, with many residents reportedly expressing fears over declining security and deteriorating public welfare.
In healthcare and education, the state also scored poorly despite years of government promises and policy announcements aimed at improving social services.
SBM Intelligence further revealed that Cross River ranked lowest in family and community support systems, suggesting increasing hardship and weakening social structures among residents.
Interestingly, despite ranking poorly overall, the state reportedly recorded one of the highest income scores in the survey, second only to Abuja. However, the report noted that earnings are not translating into improved living conditions due to failing infrastructure and poor governance outcomes.
The report warned that if urgent interventions are not made in critical sectors such as healthcare, road infrastructure, waste management and security, more residents may consider relocating from the state in search of better opportunities elsewhere.
The findings are expected to trigger fresh debate over governance, development priorities and the true state of living conditions in Cross River State.
