A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing a suit that sought to stop him from running again.
The case, filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, argued that Jonathan had already exhausted the constitutional limit for presidential tenure after completing the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s term and later serving a full term himself. However, Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the suit lacked merit and affirmed Jonathan’s eligibility under the law.
The plaintiff had also asked the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting Jonathan’s candidacy should he decide to run in 2027. The court rejected the request and reportedly awarded costs against the plaintiff.
The judgment is already generating intense political reactions ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as fresh conversations emerge around a possible Jonathan comeback amid growing divisions within major political parties.
