Opposition leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have strongly criticised comments made by President Félix Tshisekedi regarding the possibility of seeking a third term in office.
Tshisekedi recently stated that he would be willing to remain in power beyond his current mandate if the Congolese people requested it. He also noted that any proposed constitutional amendments would be subjected to a national referendum.
However, opposition figures argue that the country’s constitution clearly limits presidents to two terms. Critics specifically referenced Article 220, which they say forbids any amendment to presidential term limits, accusing the president of attempting to prolong his stay in office.
The debate has further heightened political tensions in the country as concerns grow over the future of democracy and constitutional order in DR Congo.
The controversy also comes amid continued insecurity in eastern Congo, where armed conflict has persisted for years. Tshisekedi warned that the ongoing violence could affect preparations for the presidential election scheduled for 2028, raising the possibility of delays if the security situation worsens.
