The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Cross River State Axis, has issued an official statement addressing the events surrounding the recent solidarity walk by students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS).
The peaceful procession, held on May 4, 2026, was organized in honour of three students who lost their lives in a tragic motor accident on May 1. According to NANS JCC, the student body had formally notified authorities ahead of the walk, with arrangements made to ensure security and maintain order throughout the exercise.
In a statement signed by the NANS JCC Chairman, Comrade Victor Antigha Asuquo, the council confirmed that the march began peacefully, with students demonstrating unity and grief over the loss of their colleagues. However, due to the emotional nature of the gathering and the large turnout of about 2,000 participants, moments of tension were recorded during the procession.
Despite reports circulating on social media, NANS emphasized that no lives were lost and no serious injuries were sustained during the incident involving security personnel. The situation, according to the council, was swiftly brought under control through coordinated efforts.
Following the protest, student leaders alongside NANS representatives were received by the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey. During the meeting, the students presented key demands to the government, including the urgent need to improve emergency response services at the General Hospital to better handle critical cases.
They also called for the immediate identification and prosecution of the truck driver responsible for the fatal accident, as well as accountability from the company involved, with a view to securing compensation for the bereaved families.
Responding to the concerns, the Deputy Governor assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to addressing the issues raised and promised that necessary actions would be taken.
NANS commended the students for their show of solidarity but urged continued restraint and peaceful engagement in seeking justice and reforms. The council also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, stressing the importance of accurate reporting to prevent unnecessary tension.
The student body extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, the UNICROSS community, and all those affected by the tragic incident, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of students across the state.
