The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 54-year-old man, identified as Godwin Okoko, in connection with the alleged murder of an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA) in Calabar.
According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the incident occurred on Monday, May 25, 2026, around 9:45 a.m. in the Marian Hill area of Calabar.
Police said the incident happened during a traffic enforcement operation carried out by officials of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA), involving a commercial mini-bus driver allegedly accused of violating traffic regulations.
Preliminary findings by the police revealed that violence broke out during the operation, leaving three TRAMA officials injured. One of the officials reportedly suffered a severe chest injury after allegedly being stabbed with a screwdriver.
The injured official was rushed to a hospital for emergency medical attention but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel. Two other injured officials are currently receiving treatment and are said to be responding positively.
The police further disclosed that operatives swiftly responded after receiving a distress report from the scene, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect.
The suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police command condemned the attack, describing violence against public officers carrying out lawful duties as unacceptable, while assuring residents that justice would be pursued in line with the law.
