A tragic incident has thrown residents of Calabar into shock after a traffic enforcement officer attached to the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) was allegedly stabbed to death by a commercial mini bus driver during a routine operation in Calabar South.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, May 25, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m. around the Marian Hills area of Calabar while the officer and other officials were carrying out traffic control duties aimed at maintaining order on the roads.
According to a statement released by TRAMRA’s Public Relations Unit, the officer, identified as Mr. Akerete Okon, was allegedly attacked by the driver during an altercation that broke out in the course of enforcement activities.
The agency alleged that the driver stabbed the officer in the chest with a screwdriver despite the fact that he was unarmed and dressed in official uniform.
The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead from injuries sustained during the attack.
Reacting to the incident, TRAMRA condemned the killing, describing it as a cruel and senseless attack on public officers committed to ensuring safety and sanity on the roads.
The agency called on security authorities to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspect while also urging commercial drivers and transport operators to avoid violence and cooperate with traffic enforcement officials.
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command has confirmed awareness of the incident.
Police spokesperson said preliminary reports identified the suspect as Godwin Ukpai Okobo, a commercial mini bus driver who was allegedly involved in the altercation with TRAMRA officials.
The Command stated that investigations are currently ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and assured residents that a thorough and impartial investigation would be carried out.
The tragic development has sparked reactions among residents and transport operators in Calabar, with many calling for calm and justice over the death of the officer.
