Former senator and former Cross River State governorship candidate, Sandy Onor, has emerged as the consensus presidential candidate of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the collation and presentation of the party’s presidential primary results held at the Wadata Plaza in Abuja.
The factional PDP primary exercise was reportedly supervised by members of the party’s presidential primaries collation committee led by former Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom.
According to reports, the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led PDP faction adopted Onor through a consensus arrangement after consultations and voice votes were conducted among party members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Onor reportedly emerged as the sole presidential aspirant after purchasing his expression of interest and nomination forms earlier this month.
Following the announcement, party leaders presented a certificate of return and the PDP flag to the former senator as the faction’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The development comes amid growing leadership disputes and factional divisions within major opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections, with multiple camps currently laying claim to legitimacy within the PDP.
Some reports also linked the faction backing Onor to allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, although the PDP faction continues to insist it remains a legitimate structure within the opposition party.
